Hard goods (porous loads) are defined as loads of materials for which the contaminant microbial populations are inactivated through direct contact with the steam supplied to the autoclave. For hard goods heat transfer is through steam condensing directly on items 531 being processed, unlike fluid loads where steam acts principally as an agent for heat transfer.

The sterilization of the container contents is achieved through transfer of heat from the steam to the container exterior and then to the aqueous liquid contained within. The water content of the liquid provides the sterilizing effect inside the container. For sterilization of suspensions and emulsions, the load may be tumbled to facilitate internal heat circulation. The steam in the chamber may be combined with (or in immersion sterilizers even completely replaced with) superheated water and compressed air. These cycles may be accomplished without air removal and with the aid of forced circulation to aid in heat transfer during heating and/or cooling of the load.
