The much hyped Pharma City project in Hyderabad is facing rough weather even before the land acquisition process for the project began. The farmers are complaining of inadequate compensation for their land by the government and expressing doubts about the environmental viability and impact of pollution on the lives of people surrounding the project.
In the year 2015, the Telangana state government had announced the launch of Pharma City project on a 19,000 acres of land. The main objective of this project is to expand the existing pharma base in the state and at the same time shift the already polluting industries towards the outskirts of the city and provide world standard infrastructure facilities.
Moving forward with the Pharma City project, the state government held a public hearing at the project site to know the pulse of the people and explain them about the importance of the project and how it may change the lives of the people in terms of providing employment to the locals and at the same time give the much needed impetus for the Industrial growth in the state.
“Before starting any big project, public hearing is held to know their opinion about the project. This will give an opportunity for the local people to directly air their concerns, doubts and apprehensions regarding the Pharma City project. We had got an overall positive response from the people in favour of the project. However there are some people who had expressed their doubts about the pollution control norms and environmental impact on the lives of the people. We will addresses all the issues soon and once this done we will have only environmental clearance hurdle, which I am expecting will also be cleared soon and the project will begin at the earliest,” said K.T. Rama Rao, minister for industries and municipal administration and urban development.
During the public hearing, almost all the villagers who have sold their patta and assigned lands to the government for the Pharma City complained that they did not get the correct compensation for the areas of the land they gave up. The villagers alleged that there are cases where people gave up 2-5 acres of land but officially it has been recorded to be less than even one acre. During the entire course of public hearing the committee of officials from TSPCB and TSIIC asked the people to air their doubts regarding environment protection and pollution. But the illiterate farmers, who have no knowledge about pharma pollution and its impact on environment, could only complain about the lost land and inadequate compensation.
At present out of 19,000 acres announced to be acquired, the government has in its possession only 7000 acres of land. Another 12,000 acres of land is yet to be acquired. “The Pharma City project is a big booster for the Pharmaceutical sector of Telangana. It is common that when such a huge project is launched it has to face hurdles and hardships. From land acquisitions to environmental clearances it will definitely take time.
“However, the pro-active imitative taken by the government, and the coordinated efforts from Telangana Industrial Infrastructure Development Corporation, the revenue department and the pollution control board, the project is expected to begin very soon,” said Jayanth Tagore, ex BDMA President. |
